Reducing Exposure to Blue Light

3/6/2024

With so much screen time in today’s world, our eyes are being exposed to an unprecedented amount of blue light which is emitted from devices like smartphones, tablets, and TVs. Blue light may cause an increase in digital eye strain not only in adults, but also children. The blue light coming off our favorite screens can be difficult for the human eye to focus on, which causes our eyes to work overtime to try and process it. This can lead to headaches, tired eyes, and blurry vision. Check out these tips to help to reduce your exposure:

1. Ask The Expert
At your next annual eye exam, talk to your eye doctor about your lifestyle and ask about the best options for combating digital eye strain. Even if you don’t wear corrective lenses, some blue light coatings are available for non-prescription eyewear.

2. Unplug Before Bed
Power down your devices before heading to bed. You may also want to consider lowering the brightness of your screen or enabling blue light filters such as night mode to help reduce the glare from your devices.

3. Give Your Eyes A Break
Whenever you find yourself spending time looking at a digital device, be sure to take frequent breaks. Get up, stretch, and give your eyes a rest.
From the classroom to the office, and nearly everywhere in between, digital devices are becoming more and more prevalent in our lives. But are you aware of blue light and its impact on vision? Schedule an annual eye exam for you and your family members. In addition to the tips above, your eye doctor can provide tools your family can use to help reduce exposure.
